The automotive industry now has a dedicated framework for managing and verifying carbon data, with the announcement of AutoCarbon®, a new automotive-specific carbon management system certification scheme. Designed to bring consistency and trust across OEMs and the global supply chain, it establishes a common language for carbon data that the industry has long needed.
AutoCarbon operates as an accredited management system certification, with accreditation overseen by the International Automotive Oversight Bureau’s new Carbon Division (IAOB-C). Grounded in ISO 14001 requirements, the scheme focuses on carbon management systems and process control rather than on the calculation of carbon values.
What sets AutoCarbon apart is its specificity to the automotive sector. The program verifies that Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) calculations are controlled, traceable, and credible, and that participating organizations adhere to recognized standards, including ISO 14067, approved Product Category Rules, the GHG Protocol, and automotive methodologies.
Crucially, AutoCarbon is auditable and enforceable — not simply advisory. It includes defined pass/fail criteria, annual audits, and continual improvement requirements. Certification applies to an organization’s carbon management system as a whole, not to individual products or tools, and can be obtained at either the corporate level or at individual manufacturing sites.
The AutoCarbon Standard and Rules for Certification and Accreditation are expected to be available in Q1 2027, with pilot audits planned across Europe and China throughout 2026–2027.
