AIAG Announces OEM Deployment Plan for New AIAG & VDA FMEA Handbook

December 5, 2019

New AIAG & VDA FMEA Handbook deployment plans and transition timelines have been made available by North American OEMs including Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Ford, General Motors, and Honda North America, announced at the 2019 AIAG Quality Summit.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has listed the AIAG & VDA FMEA Handbook as an accepted FMEA methodology in their IATF 16949 Customer Specific Requirements document as of July 2019. During the summit FCA stated the handbook’s methodology is “allowed for use” effective immediately on a case by case basis, and agreement between FCA and suppliers is required before beginning use. The new handbook may be used for future programs that are sourced in or after December 2019; in either case FCA requests the supplier use the handbook’s standard DFMEA Form Sheet and PFMEA Alternate Form ’G’ for their submissions.

Ford has announced they will immediately begin accepting FMEA forms from suppliers using the AIAG & VDA FMEA Handbook approach. Suppliers will be required to utilize the AIAG & VDA FMEA Handbook on a per program basis with future programs starting either 2022 model year programs or commodities requiring a Functional Safety focus.

General Motors has estimated to begin implementation with programs that begin in the calendar year 2023 but continues to investigate when to start accepting FMEAs developed using the AIAG & VDA FMEA Handbook methodology. Further announcements regarding their FMEA transition timeline will be provided through customer specific requirements.

Honda North America has announced they will immediately accept FMEA from suppliers using the new AIAG & VDA FMEA Handbook approach, estimating on or around February 1, 2022 for suppliers to be required to use the FMEA handbook for any new production processes, new production lines or new product parts. Honda expects all PFMEA documents to be in the AIAG & VDA FMEA format by January of 2027.
