AIAG Applied MSA & SPC for Practitioners

Integrate Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA) and Statistical Process Control (SPC) into IATF 16949:2016 and develop a more robust process control system.

Through a combination of instructor-led training and team exercises, you will learn how SPC and MSA can be applied to a manufacturing environment. The goal is to illustrate how these techniques can be incorporated into a system to provide both process and product improvement.

By the end of this three-day workshop you will learn how to implement SPC and MSA, get an in-depth look at how to perform the studies and calculations required, and learn how to interpret studies provided to you. From basic level statistical principles, we will assist the implementation of an effective MSA program, which ultimately leads to the effective implementation of SPC in a manufacturing environment.

Important: The course requires you to come with a laptop loaded with Excel®. There is an exceptional amount of calculation done at this practitioner level, so without a laptop you will be unable to participate and receive all of the benefit from the training. It is also required that you download both the QI Macros and Minitab demos before arriving to class.

Prerequisites

Must have a working knowledge of MSA and SPC or have completed the Understanding and Implementing MSA and SPC training. Must have a working knowledge of Excel®

Learning Objectives

  • Understand where MSA and SPC fit in the hierarchy of the core tools and the larger picture of the manufacturing environment
  • Connect with the concept that both MSA and SPC effectiveness are the result of the process, and a mere grasp of mathematical technique will not be enough to effectively apply.
  • Identify the principles of both MSA and SPC through a hands-on approach to basic statistics
  • Improve the performance of your organization by applying the principles and the tools for both MSA and SPC to link the activity with organizational performance and tools such as FMEA
  • Develop and execute plans to implement SPC and MSA, including which tools and techniques are applicable for varying circumstances. This includes a focus on soft-sided team building skills to get buy in at each organizational level.
  • Calculate and interpret MSA and SPC studies following the steps in the SPC and MSA manuals.
  • Break down causes of normal and non-normal variation, leading to the ability to identify the true reason for your manufacturing issues
  • Use simple tools to more effectively and rapidly detect issues and take relevant and cost-effective action
  • Learn which control methods and measurement studies to use for specific applications to minimize the chances of implementation failure due to using the wrong tool
  • Interpret and Construct X-bar Charts: Construction, Setting Limits, Analysis, Process Control
  • Interpret and Construct Individual and Moving Range Charts: Construction, Setting Limits, Analysis, Process Control
  • Interpret Process Capability: Pp, Ppk, Cp, Cpk, Analysis
  • Read Attribute Charts: Proportion Nonconforming (p) Charts and Nonconformities (c) Charts; Construction, Setting Limits, Analysis, Process Control
  • Define Measurement Systems and the Measurement Process
  • Construct failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) for your measurement process
  • Interpret and calculate Measurement Studies for Stability, Bias, and Linearity with examples
  • Interpret, perform, and calculate Measurement Studies for Repeatability and Reproducibility with examples
  • Interpret, perform, and calculate Measurement Studies for Attributes with examples
  • Relate SPC and MSA to ISO 9001:2015 and IATF 16949:2016 to identify how to avoid doing more work than necessary through verifying effectiveness of the studies and controls utilized

Who Should Attend

Recommended for an advanced (practitioner) training audience to include quality team leaders, third-party auditors of IATF 16949:2016, anyone involved in the implementation of IATF 16949:2016, individuals and cross functional teams focused on risk reduction and anyone who wants an advanced understanding of SPC and MSA.
